What we know about Google’s latest streamer

The leaks for Google’s latest Chromecast dongle are coming thick and fast and it’s expected to be announced at a Google event on September 30th.

Ahead of its release, the new Chromecast player – codenamed Sabrina – is said to have a revamped Android TV interface, multi-HDR support and a new Chromecast remote.

And the leaks are pointing towards this being Chromecast 4 rather than a second-gen Chromecast Ultra, with some reports suggesting it won’t support Stadia either.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Chromecast with Google TV.

When is the new Chromecast coming out?

The new Chromecast 2020 is thought to be imminent. In fact it had secretly gone on sale in the US in late September.

Previous reports indicated that it was incoming this year, though some had pegged a summer release date, but the pandemic is thought to have nipped that in the bud.

How much will the new Chromecast cost?

The new Chromecast went on sale in the US for $49.99 and in UK money that would translate to around £40.

The third gen Chromecast sold for £30, which leaves us wondering if it could be more affordable. However with multi-HDR support included, £40 seems about right for the added feature set.

What does the new Chromecast with Google TV look like?

Leaks ahead of released indicated that the new Chromecast with Google TV will have a “softer, rounder finish” and HDMI connections similar to the Ultra, and from the pictures that appeared online, that appears to be the case.

Reddit user u/fuzztub07 bought the new Chromecast from a Walmart store in the US, and the dongle is softer and more egg-shaped in look. The product came in a while finish, though a light pink and black colourway are also thought to be in the mix.

There’s also a new remote. It supports HDMI CEC for controlling the TV, and has several buttons including quick access for YouTube, calling up Google Assistant and Netflix. At the very top is a navigation button, and despite being shaped like a wheel, it only offers four directions of travel.

What features will the new Chromecast 2020 have?

We know for sure that the new Chromecast 2020 will feature a new UI called Google TV that’s apparently based on Android 10. This brings access to the large number of apps on the Play Store including Netflix, Disney+, YouTube and Spotify to name a few.

They’ll also 4K HDR and it seems as if we’ll be getting both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, which would match the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. There’s also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the latter allows for the pairing of Bluetooth headphones too.

Leaked videos show off the new Android TV UI with a search bar and categories at the top, followed by rows recommended films and TV shows. Other features includes support for multiple user accounts, sideloading APKs and USB-C connection for powering the device. Storage is 8GB, and according to the Reddit leaks, the device features a quad-core Amlogic CPU 1.9GHz processor paired with 2GB of RAM.

Reports ahead of the official announcement have also said that Google Nest services have been integrated, with notifications popping up live on screen. Other pre-release clips showed the new Google Assistant and YouTube TV integrations in action.
