Huawei Mate Xs 2 Release Date, Price and Specs Rumours

It’s been confirmed that Huawei will introduce its latest foldable phone before the end of April.

The Mate Xs 2 should feature a few nips and tucks to improve upon the designs of its predecessors, the Mate X2 and Mate Xs, but will it have enough to overcome the likes of Samsung and Oppo who are making strides in the foldable space?

Here’s all we know so far about the Huawei Mate Xs 2.

When will the Huawei Mate Xs 2 be released?

Huawei has confirmed that it will launch the Mate Xs 2 on 28 April 2022. It did so via a post on its Weibo page, showing a teaser image for the launch:

As with most Huawei devices these days, this is a China launch, and we don’t know if – or when – the Mate Xs 2 might launch internationally.

How much will the Huawei Mate Xs 2 cost?

Huawei hasn’t released any details around the pricing at the time of writing. One post we’ve seen from Ross Young, an expert in displays and a regularly reliable tipster, states that the new model could arrive with a rather eye-popping $2,500 (around £2,000) price tag.

This would put it quite a way above many of its direct rivals but would line up quite closely to the current USD price of the Huawei Mate X2:

What features and specs will we see in the Huawei Mate Xs 2?

For a device so close to launch, there’s little we really know about the Mate Xs 2. Huawei hasn’t confirmed anything except the release date, but we have seen a few rumours begin to surface.

The first come from additional posters from Huawei posted on its Weibo site that show some artistic interpretations of the Mate Xs 2 with the tagline, ‘Iterative exploration, evolution and new life.’

From what we’ve heard so far, the innovative ‘Falcon Wing’ outward folding display that featured on the Huawei Mate Xs will have improvements, hopefully to the hinge which is always one of the most important parts of a folding device.

A few images have appeared online from various Chinese tipsters, including @GeekCao on Twitter, that seem to be early studio shots of the new model. Admittedly these images are somewhat blurry and low-res, but if they turn out to be accurate then it looks like the Mate XS 2 will be a refinement rather than reimagining of its predecessor.

Putting this through Google Translate we get the following message:

“Here’s a summary of what I’ve learned so far: 1. It is said that the 4G processor is still unclear; 2. The screen has holes; 3. Three colours of black, white and purple; 4. Mainly “light and thin” and “flat” 5. The screen has added multiple buffer layers to improve the anti-drop ability. Is it possible to see the famous scene of “dropping the phone” at the press conference? ? ? 6. Rear pixel 5000+1300 wide-angle+800 telephoto.”

As you can see, this suffers a bit in translation. But picking through the pieces we can assume that the Huawei Mate Xs 2 may be limited to 4G, because Huawei’s US trade restrictions still make it difficult to access 5G modems.

It could be that the display will have a punch-hole opening for a front facing camera this time around, plus there’s the camera array on the back. The Mate Xs had a 40Mp wide, 16Mp ultrawide, 8Mp telephoto, and a time of flight (ToF) camera for depth-sensing, so we’d expect a similar setup again.

In terms of components, all we’ve seen are repeated rumours that Huawei will opt for the Kirin 9000 processor in the new model, which would be a step up from the Kirin 990 5G in the Mate Xs. Other than that, we’ll just have to wait and see what Huawei has come up with when the curtain drops on 28 April.
