This Half-Life mod by Mr_Floyd takes Valve’s iconic shooter and breathes new life into the first episode of Doom. The result is a totally believable spin on what could happen if Half-Life had spawned Doom in the first place. It takes all of the original levels from Doom’s Knee-Deep in the Dead and remakes them completely in the style of Half-Life and its many expansions, according to the official ModDB page.
“Will you live through this alien hellscape long enough to see tomorrow, or will you be just another body strewn about in the ruins of Black Mesa?”
You won’t find lava pits or even the Union Aerospace Corporation’s instantly-recognizable facilities in this mod. You’ll find a much less ominous series of office building hallways – Black Mesa, of course – combined with familiar story beats from Doom itself.
You play as engineer Dr. Stan Blazkowicz instead of Doomguy or even Gordon Freeman in the mod. His name is a fun reference to Wolfenstein protagonist BJ Blazkowicz, making this mod a love letter to three classic games at the same time. He’s just a normal guy who got stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Scientists stumble upon a bizarre interdimensional portal that’s responsible for allowing demonic creatures to pour over into our world. The two games are fairly similar in that department, so this melding makes total sense.
The mod isn’t complete just yet, but there is a demo to test out if this sounds like your cup of tea. With a new Doom Eternal expansion on the way, this could be the best way to prepare for another jaunt through hell, but with headcrabs this time around.
